Austria in Oct 2nd week.

Hi everyone!

I have a week to spend in Europe during the second week of October and would appreciate any advice on whether this is a good time to visit Austria, especially in terms of weather.
Our tentative itinerary is:
Arrive in Munich (2 nights, 1.5 days)
Salzburg (3 nights, 2.5 days, with a day trip to Hallstatt)
Vienna (3 nights, 2.5 days, with a day trip to the Danube Valley), departing from Vienna

Kindly share your advice!

If you are in Salzburg 2 nights, then you have about 1 day and you're going to Hallstatt? And pretty much the same with Vienna, you have two days, and one of the days you are doing the Danube Valley. You won't have any time in the places you are staying. Have you been to Austria before?

@julesm Thanks for your reply! I haven’t been to Austria before. Here’s the detailed itinerary I have in mind:

Day 1: Arrive in Munich
Day 2: Neuschwanstein & Linderhof day trip
Day 3: Travel to Salzburg
Day 4: Salzburg
Day 5: Day trip to Hallstatt
Day 6: Travel to Vienna
Day 7: Vienna
Day 8: Day trip to Danube Valley
Day 9: Fly out of Vienna

So technically, we’ll have about 1.5 days in Salzburg excluding the Hallstatt day trip.
I’m not sure how much time is ideal for Vienna. We’d rather skip seeing every tourist spot in the city in favor of the Danube Valley visit, but we also don’t want the schedule to feel too hectic. We’re open to keeping the Danube Valley trip flexible, and can drop it altogether if we want to spend more time in Vienna.

I'd also appreciate any advice on whether mid-October is a good time to visit Austria, especially in terms of weather. Thanks!

Hi Ami. Hard to give advice to others about weather since people's preferences are varied. Weather.com for Salzburg for Oct 15 shows average low 41 F, avg high 57 F. For me, that would be too cold, as I like warmer weather and the option to sit outside at restaurants, etc.

If you love fall and colorful leaves, then this is the right time. The only issue is that it can rain constantly (it can in summer too), but it can also be a fantastic time in terms of weather. I've experienced it all, but mostly beautiful fall weather. I really enjoy traveling between the end of September and mid-October in Austria/Germany.

For Salzburg and the Alps many of my old pics have beautiful blue skies. Some foggy and cloudy days too. I seem to be always wearing or carrying a sweater.
