Austria in November

Hello,

We had planned our trip to Austria and were supposed to leave in a few days but our dog fell ill and we had to cancel. We booked through points we have through RCI timeshare and have to use them by the end of the year. We are considering rebooking our trip for the first two weeks of November (our only possibility). We are fine if it is cold and snowy, but we don't want to come if restaurants are closed and the roads are bad (we were going to drive).

Our itinerary was to fly into Salzburg, Melk, Hallstatt, and the final week in Bad Gastein (our timeshare). Is it worth it to make this trip happen?

Restaurants will not be closed and I doubt if the roads will be bad. I was there late Nov early Dec and it was cold but there was no precipitaion.

Certainly. You will not starve, and should there be snow - rather unlikely nowadays - the roads will be maintained very well.
Be aware that according to Austria's traffic code you are not required to have winter tyres on your car, but then you are not allowed to drive should there be snow. Better to ask your car rental company for a proper equipped car. All-weather tyres are OK as well.

The first two weeks of November will be in the Nebensaison/between season. I think Salzburg and Hallstatt has none, but Melk and Bad Gastein probably will be a little sleepy. Bergbahn and some hotels, restaurants etc. will be closed. You can still have a good time, but your options will be limited. Other than unseasonable weather I don't think you will see snow. Visit a spa/bath.

We are also traveling in November and have similar concerns. As for the restaurants, I'm hoping that most of the tourist traps will be closed. The locals still have to eat, so hopefully what is open will be more authentic.
