How do Austrians celebrate this national holiday? Since it is on a Sunday, will shops and restaurants also be closed on Monday? How will train travel be affected, specifically between Salzburg and Vienna on December 8, 2024? Will Christmas markets operate on Sunday and Monday? Any information about this is greatly appreciated.

Travel should be unaffected. People travel to see family especially on holidays. Check specific city websites or individual Christmas market websites for details on potential closures in their cities.

The Salzburg Christmas market was fully operating on Immaculate Conception in 2023. The Augustiner Bräu (food hall/beer hall) was also operating. I didn't pay attention to much else, but I certainly was in no way inconvenienced.

In Austria, if a holiday happens to be on a Sunday it is just like an ordinary Sunday, shops closed, restaurants according their individual opening times. The following Monday is a regular working day.
Trains run as usual. Express trains, e.g. between Salzburg and Vienna, run on a daily schedule anyway.
