Austria family trip

I didn't think I'd be doing this so early, but I noticed that hotels in Salzburg are already booking up in summer (I know why), so I figured it's time to start making reservations.
This forum has been so helpful in critiquing trip plans, so here's my basic one. We have 3 kids: 12, 10, 6. We will be using trains mostly. We like cultural sights, historical sights (the older the better), castles (Bergs over Schloss), biergartens, and a few gondolas, but our goal is not mountain hiking. We have been to Europe as a family twice, and seen a lot of Germany. My two youngest girls are super into the Sound of Music, surprise surprise.

7/10 Fly into Vienna
7/10-7/14 Vienna 4 nights
7/14-7/18 Salzburg 4 nights
7/18-7/19 Werfen to visit castle and whatever else
7/19-7/21 Spittal an der Drau to visit a friend, this is a must
7/21-7/24 Innsbruck 3 nights, or somewhere near, limited because of lack of car
7/24 Munich (we have to end here because we are taking a flight to meet Turkish friends in Bodrum)
If we had more time we would use it.
Any thoughts?
Vielen dank!

That schedule is reasonable. There is one point I would change, namely traveling from Innsbruck to Munich the very same day as your flight to Turkey. I would not risk missing the flight because of some problems getting to Munich, especially in the light that German long-distance trains have a punctuality rate of less than 60%. I would go in the evening of 7/23 to Munich, staying the night at a hotel at the airport.

I have an idea given your preferences. I would skip Innsbruck and go instead to Graz. That would mean Vienna, Graz, Spittal an der Drau, Werfen, Salzburg and then Munich. Your kids will flip out over Riegersburg Fortress as well as the nearby Zotter Chocolate Factory (truly the best attraction in all of Austria, trust me). Graz also has an amazing historic core and the largest historic armory in the world. I think this is a better choice than Innsbruck given your other cities. Also, perhaps for Salzburg consider doing a farm stay on the Wolfgangsee instead of staying in the city of Salzburg.

Consider doing Werfen as a day trip from Salzburg. In Werfen I would do the Ice cave www.eisriesenwelt.at . Check their information on children and physical requirements. And be sure to take warm clothes including a knit cap and gloves. A unique experience

I tend to agree with skipping Innsbruck. Nothing wrong with it, but, for example, you
could bunk in Garmisch, and add in Neuschwanstein Castle, as well as go up to the
Zugspitze, and do a day in Fussen. Garmisch to Munich is an easy nonstop train ride.

A contrarian thought, but, I have to believe Salzburg will be a mob scene at that time
of the summer. The Salzburg Festival program for next summer will be released in
a couple of weeks, so you can possibly check that, but I might reduce my time in
Salzburg if you're not into crowds.

I checked and the Salzburg festival starts on the 19th of July, hence the plan to go there right after Vienna. Graz does look cool, and I had that on my list, it was the train times that made me hesitate. It is unfortunate that the non stop flights we need to Turkey are out of Munich, or I would use your schedule, Emily, but in the opposite direction. Farm stays are probably out of the question since we are train only?

There are plenty of farms that are easily accessible by public transportation. From Salzburg it is very easy to get to Wolfgangsee on bus 150.

Since many are saying to cut Innsbruck, is there anywhere in that area that you would recommend? We are flexible, just don't want to be in tiny towns, and want to be somewhat close to train stations.

You might stay in Seefeld in Tirol which is located on a small plain above Innsbruck (a train ride of 36 minutes away). Seefeld is known for hiking, providing 100+ different routes. The train ride from Innsbruck is scenic, as well as the train route to Munich via Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

I have a favourite town just up the cliff by easy frequent train from Innsbruck - that is Seefeld in Tirol. The station in Seefeld is right in the middle of town, there are restaurants, loads of places to play, cultural evenings, and mountains all around. There is a funicular taking you even higher. There are playgrounds Over all lovely. Great easy walks, or high mountain walks, your choice.

The train line is the direct yet somewhat slower link between Innsbruck and Munich, Seefeld is midway between Innsbruck and Mittenwald, another beautiful town famous for centuries for its violins, which itself is very close to Garmisch Partenkirchen.

When I visit Seefeld we stay at the "Das Hotel Eden Seefeld" https://www.eden-seefeld.at/en/ which is a 4 star Superior which offers a really good Halb Pension which we usually take. Despite the quality level their prices are usually very reasonable.

We love Seefeld in Tirol.
