Austria during first 2 weeks of November

Hi All,

I want to plan a 13 day trip to Austria, Czech and Poland with my wife in the month of November. My dates would be 2nd Nov to 15 Nov. I plan to cover Austria in 8 days and the 3 days in Prague and 2 in Budapest.

However I doubt if this would be a good time to visit as I have heard that it’s rainy during this time of the year and most of the tourist sites are closed.

Need your help in understanding if it is worth traveling this time of the year.

My interests would be both Nature, Hiking and visiting Historical monuments and museums as well.

Nov is iffy for nature and hiking. Historical interests would be workable in big cities only. Sept , early Oct would be better for your interests in general.

November wouldn't be my choice for a trip north of the Alps, but I really, really don't like chilly, wet weather. Most people don't seem to mind it too much and appreciate the less-touristy surroundings.

How many nights do you have on the ground in Europe?

I think you're overestimating the time you'll have in each country. To have 3 days in Prague, you'd need 4 nights; for 2 days in Budapest (which you will surely find extremely inadequate), you'd need 3 nights. There's no way that leaves you with 8 days for Austria. Moving from city to city is going to chew up at least half a day, and if you end up needing to travel between Prague and Budapest, the train alone will be 6-1/2 hours, not including time dealing with hotels, getting to and from trains stations, etc. And all for way too little time in the city. So I'd drop Budapest, saving it for another trip when you can give it the time it deserves.

You'll save some doubling-back time if you can fly in and out of different cities, but you'll need to check fares to see whether that is financially viable. The best gateways would be Prague and Budapest if you want to keep all three countries on the itinerary.

Edited to add: To look for flights in and out of different cities, select the "Multi-city" option on your chosen flight website.

As far as hiking in the mountains in Austria, many of the gondola and ski lifts will not be operating in November. November is the in-between season between summer and ski season. Similar to mid March-April in the Spring. Many of the mountain Hütte will be closed, some for the winter, cows are in the valley barns etc. In some mountain/ski villages it might be hard to find a hotel or restaurant open at this time.

Thanks for your reply Acraven.

We would drop Budapest from our itinerary as per your suggestion and visit it later.
However i was still wondering if its worth visiting Austria - Czech in November. I have read that most of the tourist sites are closed and so are many Hotels and restaurants. Would you still recommend visiting Austria?

I can't tell you how much will be closed in the fall because (true to my weather preference) I've only once been in Europe after October 1st. The cities like Prague and Vienna will remain lively; it's just a matter of how you deal with the possibility of only rarely seeing the sun. (That makes me lethargic.)

In Vienna and Salzburg and any city, everything is open in November. In the ski areas, places will be closed as it is between seasons.

We did a trip in 2014 where we started in Istanbul Oct 15, Budapest Oct 25 Beograd Oct 28 Sarajevo Nov 1 Dubrovnik Nov 6. It was chilly in Sarajevo (site of the 1984 Winter Olympics). Dubrovnik was fine. We had some difficulty - buses were not running in some places, some stuff was closed. We needed a coat of some kind in most places, although we did not need gloves or hats. You will be north of our trip. On the plus side, there were very sparse crowds, and there was no waiting for really anything.

Is this time fixed for you? It does seem late in the year for walking, early for Xmas markets/holiday stuff.
