Austria and Slovenia

Planning to visit in September 2024, so far itinerary is as follows….Vienna 5 Nights in Vienna train to Salzburg stay 4 nights, here are a few issues…I’d like to visit Gosau/Halstatt 4 nights…should I rent a car and drive to Gosau/Halstatt or take a train? What is the train service like ?
I then plan on visiting Slovenia for 5 or 6 days (Nova Gorica, Kranska Gora, Maribor, Ljubljana)….
Also would like to visit Budapest for a few days…..should I go at the start of my trip before Salzburg or at the end after Slovenia….again what is train service like to Budapest from Slovenia and or Vienna. Any suggestion on cutting back or adding would be appreciated (to Vienna/Salzburg/Slovenia)

I have traveled in Austria and Hungary, but not Slovenia. I think adding Budapest is a great idea.

My suggestion to you is to travel counter-clockwise from Vienna, to Salzburg, Slovenia, Budapest, and then back to Vienna if flying from there. No need to retrace you steps riding the same train in the opposite direction.

I was suggesting the train. Yes, you may need to backtrack with a rental car.

I would travel Budapest-Vienna-Salzburg-Hallstatt-Ljubljana, and try to get matching flights.

The train connection from Ljubljana to Budapest is direct, about 9 hours though, once a day at 5am.

Spending four days in Hallstatt seems too much for me, I would add a day in Graz instead on the way to Ljubljana.

Staying halstatt is basically a "rest and reload" stop....but as I'm relooking my itinerary I may be adding a trip to Munich and flying home from there....only time will tell...
