Austria --Achensee

We'll be traveling from Munich into nearby Austria, with a definite plan for Salzburg and Innsbruck (and lodging already arranged), and we are interested in visiting Achensee. Is Jenbach the best place to stay overnight a couple of nights to spend the day taking the train to Achensee and walking around the lake, and taking the boat ride? Or is there a better place? We will NOT have a car so need to be able to reach the town by train, and get to the lake by train or bus. (We never drive in Europe--we go there partly to escape the US car culture.) We are in our late 60's and don't do rugged hikes, but love walks around a lake, looking up at mountains. Suggestions of other equally beautiful lakes are also welcome. For an idea of what we like, we loved Bad Aussee --we like a real town, not a ski resort, and love the lakes there and the walks one can take.

Another desideratum: we would like to bike along the river but would need to rent bikes; so a town with a bike rental would be ideal.

My favorite place to stay is in Pertisau. I drive, but there is good local bus transport. It is a resort type town, but in a beautiful location with easy access to cable cars, boats and into the Nationalpark Karwendel. One of my favorite places in Austria. Been there many times and I have posted my visit suggestions in this Forum over the years. If you are up to a longer stay, you can continue south into the Zillertal.
