After a week in Bavaria (late August) we are heading to Austria for 3 days and hope to find a moderate hotel with a lake view or very close to a lake but not sure where. Leaving from Munich for direct flight to NY after our time in Austria.
Looking at Zell Am See or Wolfgangzee - did not research much yet but want to stay on a lake for a few days and relax and visit WW2 sites- maybe Eagles Nest or Mathausen. We love the stunning Alpine lakes. Hike, kayak, bike . Have been to Innsbruck, Salzberg and Vienna so want to focus on outdoor activities.
Any ideas very much appreciated!
Moderate budget, not big on food /drinking- prefer outdoor and historical experiences.

Konigsee is stunning, but it is on the German side. What is your budget in # terms? If you want a lakeside view, then the hotel prices won't be low. A lakeside hotel may not offer all rooms with a lakeside view.

I did a daytrip by bus from Salzburg to the Wolfgangsee, taking the boat from St Gilgen to St Wolfgang to Strobl. It's a beautiful lake in a beautiful setting, there seemed to be lots of lodging options scattered along the shoreline. And it's a quick and simple bus ride (or car) to Salzburg.
