ATMs in Tirol

I assume we'll find ATMs in Innsbruck, right? How about in smaller towns in Tirol?

Any bank will have an ATM. So yes, even in the small villages. Make SURE you notify the bank you’ll be traveling and tell them what countries you’ll be using the ATM and dates. Check your daily withdrawal limits. We bring 2 cards from 2 different banks just in case.

IF you don’t notify the bank and they see withdrawals that are from another country the account could and most likely will get frozen. You don’t want that!

You will find ATMs, but the issue is: fees. Withdraw large amounts, less frequently, to minimize fees.

I went to Austria last May and found withdraw fees assessed by the bank whose ATM I was using difficult to avoid. That was new.

There are two types of ATMs in Austria: the "official" ones bearing the blue-green logo on the street (that includes all ATMs within a bank where you can open the door with your card), and the "private" ones which charge you for a cash withdrawal.

Cash withdrawals using a credit card usually are penalized by the credit card company with 3%, therefore the use of a debit card may be better.

In Austria virtually everybody has a debit card (MasterCard DebitCard) which comes with any bank account. Using this card with "official" ATMs is free. This was originally introduced to boost the usage of ATMs (for reducing staff in the banks), but all later attempts to introduce a cash withdrawal fee have been fought off by the customers, yet.

Should you be asked whether to perform the transaction in USD or EUR, always choose EUR for getting a better exchange rate at home.

If the village has a bank branch, it will have an ATM as well; if you really need an ATM in a village you can check Google Maps for bank branches. So, for example, Igls near Innsbruck has two ATMs but nearby Lans has none. Nearby Patsch, if memory serves me, has an ATM just inside the supermarket branch. Something like this.

ATM just inside the supermarket branch.

The SPAR supermarkets usually have an "official" ATM inside.

FWIW, my Chase Visa and AAA MasterCard both waive fees for foreign transactions (no 3% as many other CC do). Check w/ your CC ahead of time.

Happy Travels!
