Arriving in Vienna on Austrian National Day

I land in Vienna at 11am on October 26th, which is National Austrian Day. The trip wasn't planned to coincide with the holiday, but I'd like to get the most out of the experience. Hopefully some of you can answer a few questions:

Should I expect large crowds?

Will transportation from the airport be an issue? My original plan was to take train in and walk the 20 minutes to my hotel, but now I'm wondering if I should grab a cab/Uber to my hotel in the Inner Stadt.

My travel companion arrives in early evening so I have the afternoon to myself and will be on foot. Will I just happen upon events? If I chose to go one of the free museums will they be packed?

I'm usually a seat of my pants kinda gal in a situation like this, but given the circumstances, I'd like to be at least a bit prepared.

Transit, including trains to and from the airport continue to operate—-so no problem there. Expect higher passenger traffic on trains and public transit. Most grocery stores and retail stores will be closed, although many cafes and restaurants will remain open. Austria’s National Day is celebrated with government buildings open to the public. So, you can enter the Parliament building on the Ringstrasse. Admission will be free at some ( not all) of Vienna’s museums, And, yes, when museums are free to the public, they do tend to get crowded.

There is no need to walk such a long distance carrying your luggage. Where is your hotel exactly? The train ticket from the airport entitles you to continue your trip using Vienna's public transport (subway, tram, bus).

Train schedule from/to the airport is the same every day, whereas public transport schedule on holidays is somewhat different because there are no rush hours, i.e., no people are going to work and no kids are going to school. (There are no school buses here, kids go on their own unless they have helicopter parents.)

As this year's holiday falls on a Monday, I expect many Viennese will go out of town for a long weekend (myself included).

Large crowds - not really, unless you are trying to get into a museum for free (I would skip this idea as it will not be enjoyable).

Transportation from the airport - not an issue. Take the Railjet to Hauptbahnhof and then get on the U1 to the First District (yeah, walking more than five minutes anywhere is very silly in a city with such comprehensive, easy and affordable transportation).

What I would do - As every year, the Austrian Military will have a display of their goods on Heldenplatz. Not really my thing. While I think museums would be a zoo, I would try to get into Parliament, which I usually restricted access. You won't really "happen" upon events as this is a very political/military holiday, not a celebratory or religious one.

Keep in mind that shops will be closed, including grocery stores, so do not plan on doing any shopping that day. If you need groceries, go to the grocery store in the arrival hall at the airport, which will be open. (Yes, I know that grocery stores in train stations are open on holidays in Vienna, but going there on the third day of a three day weekend will be like entering the pits of hell).
