I cannot answer the question as we have not been to Vienna yet, but I do have a story that validates the quality of Austrian Apfelstrudel.

Friends who are expert skiers were in Austria to ski the Alps there. Bob had a heart event of some sort on the train and was rushed to emergency at the nearest hospital. He was evaluated and stabilized, and they recommended a stent. Mrs. Bob asked him if he wanted to return home for that procedure (they had evacuation insurance to cover it) and Bob's response was "He** no, the Strudel here is the best in the world!"

A few years, one knee replacement, and a pacemaker installation later, Bob was back to skiing double black diamonds. But now he is in his 80's so they stick closer to home, and he misses about that Austrian Strudel.

I had a lovely strüdel at Frauenhuber, but probably any good coffee house will have excellent strüdel. I would also urge you to look in the case at any coffee house or konditorei. Everything is delicious. (I was in Vienna for 8 days this past October, and every dish I ate was amazing.)

In the good old times of Austrian empire, while Demel was the court pastry provider, Heiner at Wollzeile 9 was the court baked sweets provider, so I would begin from Heiner.
