Anywhere worth stopping between Hallstatt and Venice?

Hi -
We were thinking of having our last night in Austria be in Hallstatt, and then heading in the morning to Venice. We fly out the next morning and I was hoping to get to Venice in time for my kids to see it - mid to late afternoon. From what I'm reading, it sounds like this probably wouldn't happen.

On that note, is there any quaint town that's in between the two cities that is worth spending the night between Hallstatt and Venice? Keep in mind, this would mean shortening our Austria nights from 5 to 4...... (we're coming over the Grossglockner from the Dolomites and plan to stay one night near the Grossglockner and then move to Salzburg or St Wolfgang area before Hallstatt for a couple nights)

Thanks! Like I said, I'd consider that and staying fairly close to Venice - at least mid-way there - if there's somewhere quaint or scenic to visit!

Thanks!!

Do I understand that you are driving? You would still spend your last night in Venice? Why not just spend your last two nights in Venice and have a full day there? What is the advantage to stopping somewhere (and adding another hotel change)?

Coming from the Dolomites to Salzburg means going north, going to Venice via Hallstatt means going south again; a somewhat long-winded route.

Driving from Hallstatt to Venice is more than 5.5 hours (approx. 300 miles), given that there are no traffic problems on the freeways.

We are driving, and having spent a week in Venice last time (Dolomites were rained out), we don't really need two nights there. We're flying out at 10am, so I'd like to get there the day before - just so my (grown) kids can see it. The focus of our trip though is the alps, and I don't want to give up a night there......

But, I also don't want to chance a 5 1/2 to whatever hour drive it would take to get there the last day and get to Venice too late to see anything.....

I understand the going north and going south thing. We fly in and out of Venice, so we do have to go there. And, my daughter and I, being photographers, both really want to see Hallstatt....... That's why the round-about route. Just wondering if there's a midway point worth visiting between Hallstatt and Venice, besides going a bit out of the way and back to the Dolomites....

Thanks - I know it seems wacky, which is why I'm asking.

If your interest is the Alps, then Hallstatt will be a disappointment. While pretty, the mountains around it are not all that big.
