Any advice --stranded in Austria thanks to Austrian airlines

Hi Everyone, We are currently stuck in Vienna. Without notifying us, Austrian airlines canceled our flights back to New York. We have been trying to call customer service but keep getting the worst customer service of the century. One person says one thing, the next says another and now no one even answers the phone and we still can't get a return flight.

We have already lost money booking a hotel night and will lose our return tickets home from New York because we have no idea when we can get a flight out of here. Does anyone have suggestions? Do you think we can try to recover all the lost money we spent as a result of Austrian Air (ie: have to buy new airline tickets from NY to Hawaii once we can get from Vienna to NYC, additional hotel nights we will have to pay for until this is resolved, etc). We do have travel insurance.

And whatever you do, do not fly Austrian air!

Are you in Vienna? Or any city near an airport that is served by Austrian Airlines? If yes, go there to speak to someone.

If not, keep trying Austrian Airlines. As Badger stated, they should have offered you an alternative. If you are significantly delayed, they owe you hotel and food.

Keep all of your receipts for reimburrsment.

Did you buy this directly from Austrian? Are the tickets from NY to Hawaii on the same ticket as Vienna to NY?

If yes then the airline has to get you back to Hawaii. If not, then you are out the cost of those tickets unless you can reschedule.

But your travel insurance should cover it.

The first thing I would do, personally, would be to contact my insurers and see what they can do.

They may be able to put you on another carrier, covered by them- then in due course they will seek to recover that cost directly from Austrian.

If, eventually, you seek to recover your losses from your insurers that may well be a pre-condition that you at least notified them at the time. It certainly would be for my UK based travel insurance- I simply don't know how US policies work.

Under EU261 in principle Austrian have a duty of care to you, and really should be trying to re-route you themselves onto another carrier as far as NY, but the insurer will have more clout.

Did you check your email junk/spam folder? I am flying Austrian in March and when my flight was cancelled I was notified by email and offered an alternative date.

They are part of the Lufthansa Group, so there should be many alternatives available.

Unfortunately, flight cancellations can happen with any airline, so not unique to Austrian.

Good luck!!

Right now, I'd focus on how to get back; and I'd go to the airport to get something worked out since you are getting nowhere with customer service on the phone.

If you have travel insurance I would call them to notify them, and just be sure to keep all receipts and documents so that you can file a claim when you return home.

Honestly, this could happen with any airline; though we have flown Austrian Air once out of Vienna, and I did say to myself I hope this is a real airline. We had a good experience. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you so much everyone! I will call my insurer first and then perhaps head to the airport tomorrow morning to find someone to speak to in person. Really appreciate all this advice!

Frank, we are in Vienna and did buy directly from Austrian Air.

I agree with Frank. If it were me, I'd be heading to the airport in Vienna and then go straight to Austrian Airlines for some help.

Are your tickets from NY on the same ticket as AA? If so, they should be able to cover that as well.

If your cancelled flight to New York was tody, don't go to the airport tomorrow, my suggestion is to do it now. Check out of your hotel room and bring all your bags. And as mentioned, check your spam folder. It's usually much easier if you can speak at someone at the airport, and since it's their hub you should be able to find actual Austrian airlines staff there. Find someone and tell them that you flight was cancelled and that you need to be rebooked.

With airline alliances there are many options for being rebooked, not just on the next flight from Vienna to New York, but maybe also on a flight via Frankfurt och Zürich.

Austrian airlines are as mentioned required to provide you with a hotel room and food. But if you are self connecting in New York they are only required to get you to New York. How you get to Hawaii is not their problem.

Definitely go to the airport. This has happened to us multiple times when flying from Europe back to the US, most recently with American flying back to the US from Madrid. We have found that you need to go to the airport to receive help. We've tried chatting in the app, and those people are pretty helpless. We've tried calling, same thing. As soon as we got to visit with someone at customer service at the airport, she immediately put us on standby on the first flight that didn't already have anyone else on standby. We were escorted through security, waited at the gate and were the first people on the standby list the whole time despite not having status. This has happened to us with three different airlines, so it's not just an Austrian Airlines issue. On departure day, we don't sleep in anymore--even for an afternoon flight! We check the status of our flight, and go to the airport early--even if it says the flight is On Time.

Was your flight on Austrian? For today? Their flight (OS87) from Vienna to JFK left today at 11:02. The flight yesterday also left with no issues. And there is also a flight scheduled for tomorrow. What flight was cancelled?

You will probably spend a lot more money trying to rebook your own tickets. I will add that Austrian cancelled my flight in March from Sarajevo to Newark. Two days later, I received an email with an updated itinerary with different routing that worked just fine. I was prepared with alternatives but didn’t have to do anything and all my dates stayed as in my original itinerary. So definitely talk to them before trying to purchase flights on your own.

Not that it helps but they did notify me of a change of plans. They adjusted the first leg of my trip from 6 in the morning to 230pm without changing the second leg which was scheduled to depart at 11am. As a result there were no flights to complete my trip and had to come home a day early. I don't understand how a computer program could let that occur--how a second leg could depart hours earlier than a first leg.

If your flight from Austria to Hawaii was a separate ticket, Austrian Air will not help you in any way with that. Too late now, but that is why you should always book one ticket for one direction in your voyage. Trying to outsmart the system by breaking the trip into two tickets keeps each carrier from being responsible for the other.

Thank you all. After literally working on this all day my husband was finally able to get someone to help us. We just now have to go online to reserve seats but at least we are on a flight now.

Also, someone asked when we were supposed to fly out. We were supposed to fly out on the 29th to NYC.

Thank you all so much. I'm hoping it will all work out

Sometimes you have to ask for compensation. When my BA flight connection was cancelled and I was stuck in London, I actually had to go to the BA desk and demand a hotel and vouchers. Nowadays, airlines aren't offering this openly. You may need to keep calling and talking to different people and supervisors to get it resolved.

Flying out of CA Austrian Air is very convenient, since it has a direct flight out of LAX. This is the LAX to Vienna connection.
