Another Austria/Budapest train question

Was able to book discounted WESTbahn tickets plus €2 dog ticket from Vienna to Salzburg.

How important is it to purchase a seat reservation? December 27th. 11:42 am departure.

MAV now has trains posted for Dec 23rd from Budapest to Vienna. Since the only discounted fares depart too early or too late, is there any reason to book tickets in advance for the €19 tickets? If not we can remain flexible with our departure from Budapest. Does anyone know the cost of the dog ticket?

Karen,
I can't speak to the cost of Barley's ticket or travel in December but when we took the train from Budapest to Vienna in August we bought our tickets in advance. When we arrived at Keleti Station we went to the ticket office and got our assigned seats. We were glad to secure a seat assignment. We observed that a couple did not have an assigned seat and we're moving multiple times during the 2hr 45 minute journey.

Thanks Janis. With luggage and a dog, we’ll opt for seat reservations. Plus it’s a few days before Christmas and standing for two hours would not be fun either.

Karen,
in addition to seat assignments, we were able to store our luggage a couple steps away on a rack. It was within our vision and we were able to retrieve it quickly to exit the train. Hugs to Barley!
