Alternative to Hallstatt?

Planning a trip to Austria in May and of course we are planning to go to Hallstatt, but if there is somewhere less well known and over crowded, we would consider that as a plan B.

Anywhere else you would recommend that is Hallstatt like?

Look at St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut. It is a little closer to Salzburg than Hallstatt and also very beautiful.

that one was one on our list too, wasn't sure if it had the same over crowding as Hallstatt. We were thinking of doing the Schafberg Cog Railway as well

St Wolfgang also has the boat ride around the Lake where you can get off at St Gilgan and Strobl and stroll around the towns.

Maybe this is plan C, but I would suggest around Thumersbach on the Zeller See. No old city like Hallstatt or St. Wolfgang, but a beautiful area and view southwest towards the Kitzsteinhorn. By car south about 20k is the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße and the Großglockner the highest mountain in Austria (euro 39 toll and opens early May). At the Sothern end of the Hochalpenstraße is Heiligenblut. Continue a little farther and you arrive in Lienz one of Austria's sunniest cities in beautiful Osttirol.
