Good day all,
Is it worth visiting the Austrian Alps in March for a family vacation?
We love to be outdoors and explore villages and towns, but we do not ski.
If so, where to stay? Innsbruck, Aplbach? Other recommendations to visit?
Thanks,
Amy

You may not ski, but it will still be ski season at most resorts like Alpbach. Innsbruck is not a ski resort, it is a city, the capital of Tyrol.
As Sam describes above, March is still prime ski season in Austria, so if you do not ski, I would not recommend a resort like Alpbach or similar. If you want to be in the Alps at that time, it is best to stay in a city like Salzburg or Innsbruck where there are attractions not centered on skiing. Being outdoors in the Alps in March means snow gear - I am guessing you have hiking in mind, which really isn't a time that time of year given the snow and slush.
If you are up for a top hotel with wellness, indoor/outdoor pool and a good half board with access to lifts for the ski hut atmosphere, last snows then yes. The earlier the better. Just have to be ready for melting snow and maybe not the best conditions. Something like Hotel Spielmann in Ehrwald. Same in any other top ski resort. Not cheap. End of March is end of season. Mid-April is dead.
To add... Ehrwald is near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald and Berwang. Im no public transportation wiz, but you can probably get to Innsbruck and valleys to the south.
Hi all. Thanks for the info. Great help.
I thought I’d jump in with a quick reality check about March in the Alps.
March is still very much winter up high. Ski season is in full swing, and most classic alpine hiking trails are still under snow. So if you’re imagining summer-style hiking with clear paths and open mountain huts, that usually doesn’t start until late June.
That said, March can still be a great time to visit. Lower valleys and south-facing areas around places like Salzburg, Innsbruck, or the edges of the Karwendel offer beautiful easy walks, snowy scenery, and that quiet “end of winter” atmosphere. Think valley paths, forest roads, villages, and big views rather than high passes or ridges.
From my perspective, the key is expectations. March is perfect for sightseeing mixed with gentle walking, snowshoeing, or simply enjoying the alpine landscape — not for classic hut-to-hut trekking. If hiking is your main goal, I usually suggest coming back in summer. If you just want mountains, atmosphere, and light outdoor days, March can be lovely.
Hope that helps, and happy planning!
We loved our 6 stays (as recently as Dec. 2024) in Hall in Tirol at the Gasthof Badl. This is about 15 minutes from Innsbruck. The old town of Hall is beautiful.
With the warming temperatures you may get more rain and cloudy whether. I visited Salzburg in March and decided against going to the mountains because the cloud cover and rain.
But you will see that locals will go out hiking and biking in all weather.
