My husband and I are doing Best of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland this summer, ending in Vienna. We would like to fly our 3 kids (17, 19, 21) out to meet us for a week and then all fly home together. Where should we meet them that would make sense from Vienna? They would prefer smaller villages and hiking over cities, although a city day or two would be fine. My daughter and I did Best of Paris this year, so not Paris.
After Vienna, maybe a lower cost destination since you will be 5.

How far are you looking to travel from Vienna? Just a few hours? Or are you thinking about going to a different country?
There's plenty of hiking and small villages outside of Vienna along the Wachau River, like Durnstein and Melk, etc. Another idea would be to travel to Salzburg, which is where you will find some of the most beautiful scenery. You will have been there on your tour so you may not want to return, but personally I love Salzburg so I would go back at any time. But that's me. 😊
If you were thinking about traveling outside of Austria, there were quite a few neighboring countries with beautiful scenery, lovely towns and hiking opportunities that would qualify like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Hungary, and even Italy.
My first thought is to add Budapest and Prague to your list. Because they're fantastic, and easy from Vienna.
But it really makes a difference as to exactly when you're going to finish your tour, and what you're family likes (other than hiking). Car buffs, history (WWII, Roman, etc.), walking through vineyards, climbing mountains, biking, architecture, boating, music, festivals; they must have something they want to see?
Prague and Budapest work. Train to Budapest and flight to Prague. 4 nights Budapest and 3 nights Prague, but it leaves no time to get out of the cities.
Thank you everyone! I will look into these.
