Advice on driving tour of Bavaria - Austria - Switzerland - France

Hi. I am planning a 10-day car trip in early June with my husband and two teenage boys. We fly into Munich and would like to go from there to Salzburg/Berchtesgaden and make our way through Austria and Switzerland and on to Strasbourg before returning to Germany. We plan to go from Strasbourg through Baden-Baden to Wurzburg, Nuremberg and back to Munich. I need advice on our route through Austria and Switzerland. I have looked at the route through Innsbruck - Liechtenstein - Zurich but thought a better route might be through Lucerne. I am aware of the need for the Vignettes in Austria and Switzerland. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Lucerne is about 30 miles south of Zurich. Unless you want to visit this town it makes no sense to make a detour when heading for Zurich coming from Innsbruck.

Thanks for your reply. I was really just looking for the most scenic route. I do know that Lucerne is farther south but thought that route might be more interesting than going through tunnels to Liechtenstein and through Zurich.

Other than checking the box for Liechtenstein there is nothing to see there. It isn't worth going out of your way. If you are best routed that way through Liechtenstein then you can have a burger at the McDonalds on the road through.

There are quite a few tunnels in western Austria which require additional payments beyond the Vignette.

Only Austria in your list requires an IDP for all drivers, but they most certainly do so you will need them.

If I had a choice between Luzern and Zürich I would pick Luzern every single time. The lake comes right up to the centre of town and the station. Views from the lake steamers are fabulous. You can also get up into the mountains at Titlis, Rigi and Pilatus. Low level or high level, everything is beautiful around Luzern.

The train ride from Luzern to Interlaken Ost (for the Berner Oberland) via Meiringen (for the invention of meringue and Sherlock Holmes' battle with Moriarity on the Reichenbach Falls near the station) over the Brunig Pass is beautiful and very scenic.
