Advice for Summer Travel in Austria

Hello! My boyfriend and I are looking to do a 7 nights, 8 days trip to Austria in early August, flying from London.

We definitely want to do Vienna for 2 days but otherwise are pretty open. I was thinking of hitting Salzburg for more culture and Innsbruck for some alps/views/hiking. Does anyone have any advice about how to structure this trip? What's worth seeing? Any small towns we should definitely hit?

We're thinking of renting a car for maximum flexibility but aren't set on it. If we do rent, we either can start the trip in Vienna and pick up the car there after 2 days, or end the trip in Vienna, dropping the car off there.

Any advice would be SO helpful! I'm seeing some posts saying Innsbruck isn't worth it- you can get great hikes and views around Salzburg. But curious of everyone's thoughts.

With 7 nights I would not do more than 2 locations if you intend to hike.

I agree that there is plenty to see around Salzburg. We’ve spent 10 nights there over two trips and would go back in a heartbeat. Check out the following, easily reached by car from Salzburg: Hallstatt, Berchtesgaden, Werfen, Eisreisenwelt (ice caves near Werfen), paragliding either above Salzburg or Werfen, sommerrodelbahn (various locations, but we loved the views from the one near Hallein, salt mines (Hallein, Hallstatt or Berchtesgaden).

Another alternative for AMAZING hikes is the Dolomites in northern Italy. Just south of Innsbruck. Truly spectacular, but not sure you have time this trip. You’d have to skip Vienna.

Vienna/Innsbruck. The day trips and hiking options from Innsbruck are fantastic and you really don't need a car. Book flight in to Vienna and book flight out of Innsbruck ~or~ quick train to Munich and fly from there.
