Advice for short trip to Vienna

Hi! I have a four day stay in Vienna July 5-8 and am needing some advice for day trips. I'd like to spend most of my time in Vienna and then do a day trip/overnight trip elsewhere. I'm a young, solo female traveller. I love the idea of being in Vienna for a couple days, but I would REALLY love to see some of the mountains and more picturesque areas and do some outdoorsy stuff as well. I've looked at Innsbruck, Salzburg, Hallstatt... help! I see that there are several day trips available that pick you up in Vienna and bring you back that same day. Has anyone done one of these and do you have suggestions if I were to pick one place to go to outside of Vienna? Also, since it's just me, I'd like to stick to places that I'll be able to easily navigate by myself. Thanks!

It is too far to make a day trip to the mountains. If I were you, I'd go to the Wachau for the day and bike from Melk to Krems.

The mountain range closest to Vienna is the Schneeberg (snow mountain) area, where are several hiking trails and mountain huts.

It easily reachable by train: You take an express train (RailJet or EuroCity) from Vienna main station to Wr. Neustadt where you change to a local train to Puchberg am Schneeberg. The total ride is 1:25 hours.

In Puchberg you have the choice of walking up to the summit, i.e. for the tougher people, or usually you take the cog railway up to Austria's highest train station. This shortens the time to get to the summit considerably. The ride on the mountain train from Puchberg to Hochschneeberg is 42 minutes.
