Advice for Booking Tickets at the Vienna State Opera

I am looking to book tickets for June 26 at the Vienna State Opera's performance of Lohengrin. Has anybody booked tickets before? It looks like you pay and put in your request for seats but you are not confirmed fully until just before the performance. Also, it looks like you pick up tickets just before the performance. Not sure if they have a "print at home" option. I will be traveling for several weeks before hand so "print at home" might not work for me as I won't be at home! Any advice would be appreciated!

After the booking has been confirmed and your payment had been received you will get a receipt bearing your booking code. Somewhat later - but not earlier than two months before the performance - you will get a notification that your tickets are ready for downloading (pdf file) and printing at home.

If you do not download them at least 24 hours before the performance the tickets will then be transferred to the ticket counter in the opera where you can collect them just before the performace by presenting your receipt (and possibly the credit card used for payment).

We went to the opera a few years ago and bought our tickets directly from the Vienna State Opera's website as it has an English translation. We went through them because we could select our seats. For your date, apparently, that option isn't available and it says that on the website. I tried doing a mock purchase for June 26. Maybe the locals can advise where to buy tickets on line so you can select your seat.

I read about your interest in going to the opera in the Rick Steves Tours page and I think it's an excellent idea. One bit of unsolicited advice I would like to offer is that once you buy the tickets, you should listen to the opera many times so that you are familiar with the music. Familiarity with the music especially the arias will give you TREMENDOUS enjoyment at the opera house.

Okay, so it looks like I am on standby for a ticket. I put in the desired minimum and maximum ticket price and my preferred seating areas. I received an email right away saying I would be charged if a ticket becomes available by June 24. I would then be able to pick up the ticket at evening box office. I will let you all know what happens ...
