A long layover in Vienna

We purposely chose an itinerary on the way to Greece from the U.S. that included a 22 hour layover in Vienna. The same goes for London on our return trip. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for us to utilize this layover for a quick one day trip into Vienna? We booked a hotel near the train stop but I now have concerns about getting out of the airport and back in the next morning.
Thanks

What train stop?

If you are at Wien Mitte, the CAT train is a 16 minute ride direct to/from the airport. If you are flying Austrian, you can even check in the night before and drop your bags (read their website carefully to make sure you can do this though).
You do have to watch very early flights though as it doesn't run 24 hours (nor does the U-bahn). But you can always get a taxi to the Wien Mitte for an early train if need be.

Thanks for the prompt reply. We are staying at the Steigenberger Hotel near the Herrengasse subway stop.

We are taking a British Airways flight from London to Vienna and leave the next day on a NIKI airways flight to Crete.

Herrengasse will mean U-bahn to Wien Mitte, then train to the airport.
You can input your hotel address and the airport on the WienerLinien trip planner site and get your options depending on time of day.

Also, the Postbus has expanded their airport service, so that might work from you. There is a stop for one of their airport routes at Volkstheater (same U-bahn line as Herrengasse).

Since your time is tight, just do your homework on timing and route so you can relax and enjoy your time in Vienna. Have fun!

Vienna is a big city to experience adequately in a few days, let alone a few hours. I would not personally advocate this kind of travel - if your flight arriving is late, then you lose precious time and may end up with a total loss. If you have the opportunity to change your flights to extend your time in vienna, at least one full day (two nights) would be a much better way to see the central 1st district of the city and a calm meal.
