My family will be in Vienna for a few days during our 3 week Germany/ Austria/ Prague trip in September. Two questions for my fellow travelers out there 1) best area in Vienna to stay? 2) would like to get some suggestions on best places to see live classical music while there. Thank you!!
Alison
First district is the best, but can be pricey. Pension Suzanne is nice and not to expensive:

As for concerts use this site:
AVOID the people in period costumes selling concerts...not very good quality and expensive.
Almost any area in Vienna will be fine for staying at, as the excellent public transit system can have you in the city center in minutes.
Check out Pension Sacher - fantastic location overlooking St. Stephen's Cathedral.
Alison, if you are in Vienna on a Sunday morning, check to see which classical masses some of the larger churches may be performing. They can be wonderful, and they're free!
We've always stayed at K&T Boardinghouse, a very small B&B with the an incredible location. The Metro U3 is across the street, and you can be downtown in 5 minutes. Mariahilfer Strasse neighborhood is loaded with restaurants, stores and grocery stores.
When we first stayed there 10 years ago, Tina and Kaled were close friends of Rick Steves. Steve too stayed with them when in town.
We'll be in their new second location 4/1/2014 for 4 nights @ 79 Euros per night.
You guys are awesome, thank you so much for the replies!
Pension Nosek. Right in the center on Graben. Large room, reasonable price, good breakfast.
