7day March itin suggestions for Austria with family -

Hi,

I'm planning a spring break with my husband and 12 year old daughter for mid March '25. She loves horses and is dying to see the Lippizanner stallions of Vienna - so we need to spend at least a few days in Vienna to have time for that and also overall exploring. I'm trying to figure out where else to go from there that would be interesting at that time of year for all of us without feeling overly rushed. Salzberg? Worth it to go to Hallstatt - ice caves, salt mines? Any tips or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Heather

Go to Salzburg and stay in the Old Town area, charming! We loved it there.

I can, and have, spent a couple weeks in both Vienna and Salzburg, and I've been to both in March. You should expect there will be snow, and plan accordingly. You may want to look at Bratislava also. Plan on a day at a Therme, that's always nice when it's cold outside. I wouldn't normally go to Hallstadt, but it might be worth it if the weather is clear. Just take a look and see if anything is open as you will be out of season.

You should expect there will be snow, ...

It is possible, but rather unlikely. For the last three years snowfall in Vienna was about 13 inches in total for the whole winter.

The Spanish Riding School's website (https://www.srs.at/en/) doesn't have the 2025 schedule posted yet, but judging from the 2024 version there will be performances on Saturday and Sunday most weekends. There may be stable tours and training sessions during your visit too. She will love it. I took my children to Salzburg when they were 8 and 11 and they had a great time because they were already familiar with the Sound of Music movie. But I'll leave others to tell you what it's like in March as we were there in June.

My children were 13 and almost 9 on our trip and they both loved Salzburg!

If she has seen the Sound of Music, it’s very fun to visit some of the sites. We didn’t do a formal tour, just found a DIY list online. Mirabell Gardens is fun to visit regardless and has a nice little playground.

The fortress was also a big hit. There is a children’s booklet with a few activities, if she’s not too over that sort of thing. I’m not certain what is open in March.

My younger also really enjoyed a marionette show at the theatre! It’s a beautiful little space and a unique cultural experience.

We loved Hellbrunn Palace and the audio tour of the gardens.
