5-7 day Itinerary for Innsbruck, Germany, Switzerland, Italy

Hi- my wife and I are planning to visit our daughter this summer while she studies abroad in Innsbruck, We would like to see as much of the surrounding area as we can while not seeing it all from the window of the train as we pass thru. Could we reasonably expect to make the stops listed above over a 5-7 day trip? Quite frankly, we probably won't spend much time in Innsbruck, as our daughter probably won't want us there anyway. My wife has always wanted to go to Italy, and I am dying to get to Switzerland. Too ambitious?

Thanks in advance!

rob.claxton, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland are whole countries. You have to narrow things down if you want to get an idea of what is realistic. You also must realize that it takes time to travel from one place to another, so 5 countries in 5-7 days means never getting out of the car.

Would help if we knew where you’re flying from and where you’re flying into in Europe and then the departure airport. Also if it’s 5 days, nights or 7 days, nights.

Germany, Switzerland and Italy are pretty broad terms.

Flying into and out of Munich you could easily see some of Bavaria, Innsbruck area and the Dolomite area of a Italy.

Yes, too ambitious. You want to see 4 countries in 5-7 days. Could you theoretically step foot in all 4 in that time, just to say you’ve “been there”? Yes. But you’ll spend all your time traveling between them and no time being IN any of them. Pick two. Max. Spend 3 nights in each. Fly out of the last country you visit.

Does your 7 days include your visit with your daughter? Or is your daughter being there an excuse to go to Europe, since you say she doesn’t want you there? Can you add more days and see the places you want to see?

I spent time in Innsbruck in college. You're 2 hours south of Munich and 15 miles from the Italian border thru the Brenner Pass. The place is knock dead beautiful with the valley only being 1 to 1.5 miles wide and 10,000' mountains on each side. My wife and I have been back a number of times over the years.

We always rent a car, and drive up on the mountain going from village to village.

It's all controlled access roads down to Venice.

We always love Salzburg, and it'd be a good day or two trip.

But our favorite day trip is to go over to Zell-am-Zee and turn south going over the Grossglockner High Alpine Highway. The south side of the 12,000 ft. mountain is simply the most beautiful place we've ever seen. You can drive east thru Northern Italy and catch the highway back to the Brenner Pass.

We skip Switzerland as it's more difficult to travel thru (than Austria) and the mountains in Tirol are the same as in Switzerland.
