Hello! My family (2 of us + 2 teenage kids, ages 18 and 16) are visiting Austria in mid-late Aug and were planning to undertake a 4 day hike through the Stubai Alps. We are reasonably experienced hikers (we did a 4 day trek on part of Alta Via 2 in the Dolomites last year), but not experts by any means. Our preliminary itinerary is as follows:
Day 1:
- Drive to Mutterbergalm and park our car there (I understand there is a free parking lot there?)
- Hike from Mutterbergalm up to Dresdner Hut
- Hike from Dresdner Hut to Sulzenau Hut.
- Spend night at Sulzenau Hut
Day 2:
- Hike from Sulzenau Hut to Nürnberger Hut
- Hike from Nürnberger Hut to Bremer Hut.
- Spend night at Bremer Hut
Day 3:
- Hike from Bremer Hut to Innsbrucker Hut.
- Spend night at Innsbrucker Hut
Day 4:
- Hike down from Innsbrucker Hut to Neder
- Catch bus from Neder back to Mutterbergalm to our car
Would appreciate your thoughts on this schedule. In particular:
1. Do the hikes for days 1 to 3 look manageable? In particular day 2?
2. How much of a problem or risk is bad weather in mid-late Aug?
3. Could anyone confirm that free parking for 4 days at Mutterbergalm is possible?
4. Any other thoughts or advice for this?
