3 or 4 day Austrian train pass questions

After researching still have a few questions -
Deciding if the 3 day or 4 day pass is best for my train travels in Austria - depends on question #1!

1 - St Gallen Switzerland to Innsbruck trip - Can the Austrian day pass be used for the Austrian part of the trip as 1 day? And buy the Swiss ticket for Swiss part? Or best to buy the ticket and not worry about using the Austrian day pass.

2 - Can the pass be used on trains where you need a reservation? From Innsbruck to Vienna seems its best to have a reservation for the express trains - and wondering how you use the pass on making reservations?

thanks - this forum has been such a big help

  1. If this trip is fixed and well in advance, you are likely to get a Sparschiene Ticket for a fairly low price. This will be for a certain train that you must take or loose the ticket and have to buy a new one. For instance, it could be as low as 19.90 EUR. The anytime price is 61 EUR.

  2. No trains in Austria have required seat reservations, Yes, it could be a good idea. You can always buy seat reservation separate from the ticket and for Austria, About 3 EUR per seat.

And Innsbruck to Vienna can be done for 49 EUR with advance tickets. You ask about a 3 or 4 day Austrian train pass, and that is only 2 trips. What other trips are you planning? Does a train pass even make sense?

Westbahn also operates trains from Innsbruck to Vienna (West Bahnhof) for as low as 18.99 EUR.

I am not aware that there is a 3 or 4 day pass for Austrian railways, just a one day pass.

The Austrian "Einfach Raus"-Ticket (one day pass) wouldn't make any sense for you. It is not valid in the State of Vorarlberg, which is adjacent to Switzerland, and you need to travel through on your way to Innsbruck. Additionally, it is valid on local trains only, i.e. those where there are no seat reservations.

All other passes (KlimaTicket) are either valid for whole of Austria or one of the nine States, being valid for all means of public transport, not only railway.

There is a 3 and 4 day Austria Pass from Eurail. $213.30 US or $251.80 US with fees respectively for a single person aged 28 to 59, 2nd class,. Whether or not they are worth it is the question. The OP shows only 2 long distance trips, so the other trips may be local day trips for which there may be better deals locally.

There is a 3 and 4 day Austria Pass from Eurail.

Eurail is a third party ticket reseller, making money from tourists who are not willing or not able to deal with local train operators and their booking system.

Everybody must decide for themselves whether the comfort is worth the premium price.

thank you - Will look into the links provided
Plans are for 3 long train trips - all in Austria (discounting St Gallen to Innsbruck)
Innsbruck to Vienna
Vienna to Salzburg
Salzburg to Vienna

And when I did the math - it seemed better for a 3 day pass but will relook and refigure

Why go to Vienna, then to Salzburg, then back to Vienna? Salzburg is halfway between Innsbruck and Vienna on the main railway line. So why not Innsbruck to Salzburg to Vienna? More time visiting and less time riding trains.

And don't use railway map in the RS book with the train costs. Those are walk=up prices and you can always do better with advance purchase nonrefundable or semiflexible tickets. You will have hotels booked, so you know where you have to be each day, so why not book train tickets as well.

ok thanks - Yes I am well aware of where the cities - but a Vienna tour with an international Art group is main reason for the trip - and other reasons of the way the trip is planned
