Fantastic choice. Hiking is everywhere. This site in German can get you started.
Also be sure to visit the Leutasch Gorge.

Thanks Emily Had a look -feel better about the choice- Any thoughts on Berchtesgaden? was going there after Munich but I live near the mountains- Waterton very similar so thinking I might try for 2 days in Berlin after I swore I wouldn't go there!

I have been to B'gaden. What thoughts would you like? It is a pretty alpine town with history, a beautiful lake and vistas. Seefeld is more modern, but if you visit Mittenwald while you there you will get your fill of pretty Bavarian town. I'd say that unless you are a history buff and want to visit the Eagle's Nest (or work in a side trip to Salzburg), you should explore something different like Berlin.
