We have been looking around at a lot of the things to do in the area. We want to spend at least a day in Salzburg and doing various Sound of Music and Mozart things. We also want to go to Hallstat. It looks like a beautiful city. We have been trying to determine if it is easiest to stay in the town of Bad Ischl as a central hub for those trips. We are flying in to Salzburg (we think) and have three days to ourselves before we are meeting other members of our family who are coming down from Prague to Vienna. If anyone has any ideas or trip plans that may work for us, it would be appreciated.
Train travel time from Salzburg to Hallstatt is 2.5 hours one way and Hallstatt is a fine place to stay overnight. I don't see how staying in Bad Ischl would be any improvement.
Thanks for the advice. We finally decided to nix Hallstatt because it just wasn't going to be feasible with our plans. We also decided to fly in to Munich to save some money and add another country to our tour.
Stay in Hallstatt. Find a hotel or pension with a balcony and unobstructed night view of the lake - absolutely essential - I did this once and would pay any sum to experience it again!
