3-4 nights from Vienna

Ok Austria experts, we have 3 or 4 nights from Vienna (also returning to Vienna) in late March. We want to stay in one location. Will be using public transportation. Looking for relaxing, scenic place - not a bustling city - mountains and/or water. I'm considering:

  1. Hallstatt or nearby
  2. Berchtesgaden
  3. Carinthia/Worther See (maybe a day trip to Lake Bled)
  4. Ljubljana - I know, it's a city, but it tugs at me and Lakes Bled and Bohinj could be a day trip

What are your thoughts especially keeping in mind March weather and ease of public transportation?

Thank you!!!

Late March in Austria is somewhat iffy. Sometimes the winter weather has turned into Spring and sometimes it is still snowy or even raining.
I would usually suggest Salzburg to travel out of, however it is a little bustling. So is my favorite city, Innsbruck--but with mountains of incredible beauty.
An easy to reach city from Vienna is Bratislava--39 miles upriver but a world away.I
Our newest other favorite city is Budapest, 3 1/2 hour train ride from Vienna. We would love 3-4 days there.
If you were a month later, weather would certainly be more favorable.

My thoughts are that late March is still ski season. If you go to any of these places, the focus will be on Winter sports. Is that what you want to do?

Thanks for your replies. David, we will have 3-4 other days in our trip to explore Budapest - as well as time in Vienna. I appreciate the vote for Bratislava as that is a thought we had for a day trip. Emily, Winter sports aren't what I really want (I want to frolic in a green meadow with hillsides of wildflowers where I share the trail with belled cows 😊), but we are locked into late March for several reasons. I know us and how we travel and we will need time away from the larger cities to slow down and take in some natural beauty. I realize the natural beauty may include a lot of white that time of year! I've looked at temps and precipitation. Given all that, any suggestions in terms of ease of transportation and spectacular beauty?

You won’t find green meadows or wildflowers in this part of Europe until late April or May, especially in the mountain areas. I know that Crete is famous for their wildflowers in April and they are much to our south. Cows also won’t be out at this time. We were in Slovenia/Lake Bohinj last May and the wildflowers has just come out - we were there for the wildflower festival, actually. Sorry to disappoint you, but your timing is wrong for green meadows, cows and bells. If you can give that up, any place you name is beautiful, but again, it will still be ski season.

I know, I am fully aware March is not the season for my idyllic Austrian scene, BUT March is when we are coming! Our daughter is studying abroad next semester and we are looking forward to a visit with her. She must return to the US as soon as her program is complete which eliminates travel later in the spring. I'm trying to make the best decision knowing it may be snowy, rainy, cold, etc. It's not ideal but it's what we've got to work with. Thank you!
