2 weeks to see Munich, Salzburg, Vienna (where i need to be for a few days), Prague and then what?

Mid august we need to see our son performing in Vienna with a choir group. We want to travel before and after, not sure if we should begin in Vienna or perhaps somewhere in Germany. I’d like to tour Dachau, my husband has tossed Prague into the mix, I was thinking about traveling from Austria to Slovenia. I am totally lost with this planning. I’ve never been to any of the places I’m mentioning. We havent purchsed plane tickets so we could fly into one city and out of another. I would like to have a nice balance of smaller, quieter towns and larger cites. In Italy i really did not like spending time in Rome and loved the time in corona and some of the other small hill towns. Too much of the crowd makes me crazy. Any suggestions would be most helpful and welcome.

You need to reduce the number of cities you want to visit. Don't underestimate that you will arrive jet-lagged, and the time needed to go from one place to another.

My suggestion would be to fly in and out of Munich because of the lower airfares. See: https://www.kayak.com/flights

Arrive in Munich, take immediately a train to Salzburg. Stay in Salzburg for a few days. Take a train to Vienna. Stay in Vienna as long as possible, see your son, etc. Take a train back to Munich. Stay there for the rest of your fortnight. Fly back home.

Forget Prague and Slovenia because it is out of the way.

Thank you. Do you think the trip as you laid out would lend itself to going a different way on the return trip to Munich? Do you have any particular spots in between my beginning, middle and return that you would recommend?

Since you mentioned liking smaller towns, I might add to the suggested itinerary a stop in Hallstatt for a day on your way back from Vienna to Munich. It’s a beautiful small town and would offer opportunities for hiking, a visit to the salt mines and bone chapel as well as a nice opportunity to relax.

I am probably in the minority here, but having done this trip, I do think it is doable in 2 weeks:

Day 1: depart
Day 2: arrive Prague
Day 3: Prague
Day 4: Prague
Day 5: Prague to Munich
Day 6: Munich
Day 7: Munich
Day 8-13: to Vienna and do a couple day trips from there to smaller Austrian cities or towns (Salzburg, etc)

You obviously won’t be able to see everything but if you operate under the assumption you will be back someday and do the things that most interest you, I think this is a very relaxing trip
