2 weeks in Austria

I am a solo traveller and plan to visit Austria in May 2018. It's going to be my first Europe visit. Primarily to meet family in Steyre(2 to 3 days) and then explore the country. Would like to request itinerary suggestions and also possibilities of including any neighbouring country (northern Italy/ Hungary / Prague).
Also is convenient to hire a car or is train travelling more preferred.
Thank you :)

I'd do the following:

Vienna - 4 nights
Train or boat - Budapest - 4 nights
For the rest, I would go to Linz - Mauthausen Concentration Camp
or Salzburg - 2 nights

this trip could be done as a circle tour starting and ending in Vienna

I am unfamiliar with your family location - you could fit it in somewhere in the trip

Hi Paul, thank you for your suggestions. I took some inputs from my family as well and came up with the below:
2 days in Vienna,
2 days in Salzburg which would include 1 day trip to hallstatt and another day being the sound of music tour with the salt mines tour,
2 days in Innsbruck( still to finalize the activities for both days) ,
3 days in Prague ( still to finalize my itinerary for Prague)
rest of the days my family would be showing me around the country side :) .
was wondering if I should book the Panorama tours in Salzburg ( sound of music tour and salt mines, Halstatt day your )whether they need to be booked well in advance or can be bought over the counter.
Would like to request any suggestion with Innsbruck(activities / tour/ sight seeing for 1.5 day ) and recommendations for my Prague stay.
Thank you :)

You do not appear to be allowing for travel time. You're planning some fairly long travel legs. If you have 2 days in Vienna, then 2 days in Salzburg, that sounds like you're just planning to be in each city for two nights. Two nights is one full day and a few hours of sightseeing time by the time you get settled in your new hotel. I don't see how you can do two day-trips from Salzburg with that little time, and two days is also a very short time allowance for Vienna.

Ok.. Maybe I was not very detailed in mentioning that I will be staying the night I arrive in Vienna and spend the following day in Vienna. The next 2 days I'll be with family in Steyr and 3rd day will travel to Salzburg on the early morning train arriving at 10.30am. Stay 2 nights there and 3rd day morning board the train to Innsbruck. Stay the night there and leave for steyr by the 4 pm train. 3 full days in Steyr followed by train travel to Prague on the 4th day (takes bout 4 hours )

I love Vienna. Last time I was there for 3 days but it's not enough. I would suggest if you go in summer, go to summer palace and spend 1 day there. It's huge and beautiful. You need at least 4 days in Vienna.

Vienna is gorgeous however it depends on what you're looking for. Salzburg and Innsbruck are great too. And don't underestimate Linz, it's has it's hidden gems!

I’d skip the trip to Innsbruck, and add the time to Vienna and/or the Salzburg area. I found Innsbruck to be overwhelmed with visitors last May, and it doesn’t add much that you won’t get by staying closer to Salzburg and Hallstatt- that is, beautiful mountain scenery. Consider a visit to a Melk, between Salzburg and Vienna. Also, in my opinion, any amount of time you can spend in Vienna is never enough!

I included Innsbruck as I would like to visit the Swarovski crystal world which is like a 4 hour tour followed by/ next day an Innsbrucker Nordkettenbahnen round trip (excited bout taking the cable car to the top).
