We have 5 days total in Austria and I was thinking 3 days in Vienna and 2 days in Wachau valley. Last 2 days of october.
I was planning to use public transportation and to rent bikes. We also like hiking. Where should we be based? Do you have recommandations for a nice hotel easy to access by train or bus?
Would it be better to do that as a day trip from Vienna?
Thank you!!
Giveing dates always works better. "we are arrving in Vienna mid afternoon on 13 October and departing Vienna on mid afternoon 17 October."
So, you want two days in Wachau valley
13 arrive and you have half a day
14 one full day to see Vienna
15 morning depart for Wachau Valley.
16 evening return from Wachau Valley.
17 morning train out of Vienna
Well, you just spent 1.5 days in Vienna. Not my most favorite city in the world, but for you to begin to discover for yourself if you love it or not you need at a minimum not less than 3 full, wake up and go to bed, days in Vienna.
I strongly recommend that you visit the Wachau as a day trip from Vienna. That way you can ensure you go on the best weather day, especially if you plan to bike. Weather at that time can be very fall-like or we can already be in winter. I would caution that Oct. 26 and Nov. 1 are public holidays.
if you do decide to spend a night in the Wachau, then we really like the Gästehaus Stöger in Duernstein. I would recommend staying in a village rather than in Melk or Krems which are much bigger towns.
I have made several posts about the Wachau - I would encourage you to read them.
Thank you for your input, very helpful
I think a day trip to Wachau on a good weather day is a better idea.
Also a good thing to know about the public holiday on oct 26 as it is my first day in Austria.
