14 days including Munich-Neuschweinstein-Austria-Prague

Hello everyone!!

This July my family and I (4 people) want to fly to Munich, be there maybe 1 day, then travel down to Flüssen, because we really want to see the Neuschwanstein castle. Afterwards our plan is to go to Austria and be there most of the time, travelling by car, ending up in Vienna. And from Vienna we could take a train to Prague and finish our trip there.

I wanted to ask
1) if you have any recommendations as how to combine this Munich-Neuschwanstein trip with travelling within Austria, especially as I know there are fees if we rent a German car and take it inside Austria. Maybe it's better to take a train from Munich to Flüssen and back, and then take a train from Munich to Salzburg and rent a car when leaving Salzburg?

2) If there is any itinerary you suggest inside Austria, as we would love to see cities such as Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Hallstadt, but perhaps Graz and Linz, for example, are too far off the main route. Maybe even Innsbruck is hard to go to, if we take a train from Munich to Salzburg. I also see many people who suggest using a car, but others train, so I don't know if there is any suggestion, especially having only 2 weeks. We would love to have a car to be able to stop every now and then at random towns, but perhaps there's not really time for that.

3) Is it doable to include Prague in this itinerary, as in Munich → cities in Austria including Vienna → Prague in 2 weeks?

Sorry for the lengthy post, and thank you so much for any advice you can give us!!

No. You listed 7 destinations, meaning a new place every second day. Given that every transfer from A to B will cost you half a day, there is not much time left to visit a lot, not to talk about that you will be under a constant time pressure.

Reasonably you should narrow down your plans to 4 destinations.

Yeah, that sounds about right :( Ok, so maybe we could just do Munich-Neuschwanstein, and then visit some places from Austria, removing Prague. Do you have any places in Austria you would say are an absolute must-see?

We are going for 10 nights and splitting our lodging between Salzburg and Munich, with day trips added in. I think you are too ambitious.

That depends on your interests. Mountains/lakes/landscape/hiking or culture/museums/music/archticture/history?

I'm of the latter type, so Vienna is an absolute must.

I loved Fussen and Vienna, was less impressed with Salzburg, although it was exciting to see a piano that Mozart actually played.

We would like both a bit of nature and culture, although we don't really hike in family. I think we would be content with just moving through Austria by car, being able to stop every now and then to look at nature, without actually getting off the road. And we are quite used to tours in which we visit several cities in a short time. I'm more of the idea of staying 3-4 days in one single city, as many of you suggest, getting to know it better, but my family wants to explore more places I believe haha.

I'm starting to think that maybe we can do Munich, maybe 2 days, and in a third day trip see Füssen and the castle, and then go to Austria and move via car directly to Vienna. And that way we can focus on Munich and Vienna, and just pass by other places in our way to Vienna. @cala, when you visited Füssen and Vienna, how did you move from one place to the other?

Going to Austria and not spending some time in the alps and Salzburg would be a major miss in my opinion. Paying the fee to have your rental car the whole time is going to free you up to do more with the time you have. Also, I personally find Prague way more interesting than Munich. I think you could fit it in with something like this…

Munich > Garmisch 4-5 nights > Salzburg 3-4 nights > Vienna 3 nights > Prague 3 nights

From Garmisch you can see Neuschwanstein, Füssen, Seefeld, Eibsee and even Innsbruck if you’re interested. From Salzburg, see Hallstatt & the Salzkammergut, as well as the city itself. Then end with your cities (Vienna & Prague) — this will give you a good mix of alpine nature & cities

@wanderweg Wow, that sounds like a very nice idea! Thank you, I hadn't considered Garmisch and it looks super nice!
