14 day Munich, Salzburg, Vienna with day trips

I have really enjoyed reading through this forum and the information is so helpful! I am trying to plan our 14 day trip for the spring (4/18-5/03). We fly in and out of Munich. Here is my preliminary itinerary:

Munich- 3 days at beginning and 1 more day at the end.

Salzburg -4 days/3 nights. We plan to do at least one day trip to Berchestgaden and Konigssee.

Vienna- 6 days. We plan to do a day trip to Krems/Durstein/Melk to go to a vineyard, cruise the Danube and do some cycling. Will most likely do at least one more day trip.

Thought about going directly to Salzburg once we arrived in Munich (and doing our days in Munich at the end) but that makes for a very long day. Has anyone done this? Our plane lands at 2:40pm

Would like to know if it is better to the Wachau trip as an overnight on our way back to Munich.

Here are the hotels I am considering.

Salzburg- Hotel Goldgasse , Hotel Elefant, Hotel Auersperg

Vienna- Hotel Alstadt or Andaz Vienna am Belvedere. We have Hyatt points that we can use.

Was thinking of traveling back to Munich on 5/01 since that is a holiday and there might be a lot of closures that day.

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You might consider attending a Maypole Raising on 1 May. Usually a small local Fest with traditional food, music and sometimes dancing etc. In many places people dress in Tracht. It can take time raising the Maypole with poles and rope and multiple beer breaks! We happened to be in Dürnstein this year for theirs. Emily had recommended staying at Gasthaus Stoger in Dürnstein and it was great for us.

mchpp-
We have the chance to be in Durnstein on May 1st this year. Sounds like you would recommend the Maypole raising? Is it an all day festival thing or an afternoon/evening thing? Should we think about spending the night? Are there train s from Vienna or do we need a car?

Thanks, Dan
