1 day in Vienna - best activity?

What's the one 'must do' thing in Vienna if there for one day? The palaces get a lot of attention - Hofburg vs Schonbrunn - is one much better if I can only do one? I’m open to other experiences, especially if related to world history, food, beer, wine or outdoors activities. Will probably skip the classical music this time.

We went to a rehearsal at the Spanish Riding School which was very interesting.

I had the most outdoor fun the day I used the trams as my own hop-on-hop-off experience to sightsee around the Ringstrasse. Described in the Rick Steves guidebook. Less than an hour to make the trip, plus whatever time you spend at any of the stops.

Do the Hofburg and the surrounding areas,if you go to Schonbrunn you will have to travel there and back, you will get more places at the Hofburg area.

What time of year?

I would do this in one day:

Breakfast at the Meierei (take the U4 to...)
Schonbrunn in the morning, but only the outside
Take the U4 back to Karlsplatz, have a sausage for lunch at Bitzinger
Walk along the Ring to the Rathaus
Walk through the Volksgarten to the Hofburg
Walk through the Hofburg
Stop at Demel for cake and coffee
Walk up Kohlmarkt
Walk across the Graben
Visit Stephansdom, going up the tower
Walk down Kaerntnerstrasse to the Opera
Get on Tram D, exiting to the Upper Belvedere
Visit the Belvedere and see the Kiss
Walk down to the Lower Belvedere and have dinner at the Salm Braeu
Take the 71 tram to the Ring and have a nightcap at the terrace of the Ritz Carlton Hotel

That’s what I’d do.

Gonna be there in summer, so all of these suggestions are good and seem possible. I have many options to choose from. Thanks everyone for the tips.
