We are looking to book a place to stay in Vienna over new years! Any ideas? We are considering Air BNB but would rather have a more authentic experience.

This late in the game, people's favorites will probably be booked.
Your best bet is to see what's available on booking.com. You can always ask here about places you find.
I have no idea what constituents an authentic experience.

Just be aware that Epiphany is January 6, and its a national holiday, or at least some places close. We went to the Nachtsmrkt and sadly, found it closed. I have stayed at Hotel Austria a few times, and its a favorite. Reasonably priced, locally owned, great location and fantastic included breakfast.

If you can't find any authentic place in Vienna this late. You could base yourself in Baden which is a town South of Vienna with efficient train connections to Vienna (travel time on a R-train approx. 25-35 min depending on train station). Baden owns a cute little old town and is also known as SPA town.
And between Baden and Vienna is another lovely town which is Mödling. It has even more frequent and quicker connections to Vienna than Baden.

Another vote for Hotel Austria. We were there 3 months ago and would gladly recommend. Great location, well appointed rooms, delicious breakfast included, easy walking distance to restaurants & sites.
