Favorite Viennese Cafe(s)

Café Central - Imperial Café with extraordinary vaulted ceiling interior; best dessert case; also good menu beyond coffee and desserts.

Café Hawelka - Family-run, artsy café which has hosted leading innovators for decades; cluttered, wooden furniture crowds the café; known for serving Buchteln, which are jam filled buns, later in the evenings.

Demel Café - By many accounts the originator of the Sachertorte. But get the violet ice cream sundae or the afpelstrudel instead; sit upstairs so that you can pass through the pastry kitchen.

Café Wortner - Voted best café in Vienna; especially nice in the spring/summer in the front garden

Café Sperl - What you probably think of when you think of a Viennese Café

Oberlaa-Stadthaus, 1010 Wien, Neuer Markt 16. Started going there 20 years ago when we lived in Wien, return there every time we are back in town. Never disappointed.

I love the Café Central. Use to take visitors there when we lived in Vienna years ago because it is so impressive on the inside. Last time there was a couple of years ago and the meal we had was very good as was the amazing dessert.

Looking forward to eating there again on our trip in September.
