Windmills on Nat'l Windmill Day -- for non-windmill fans

We 4 will be arriving in Amsterdam on THE weekend that includes Nat'l Windmill Day(s), and will be staying on the E side of town. One of us wants to check out this event, others are blah about it but will go along if it's rave-worthy. We don't all need to hang together, but that is our strong preference. Still, as we will be arriving that morning from western US, we will be so very jet-laggy that maybe touring windmills during this annual festival is too much to hope for? (If not for jet-lag expectations at least 1-2 others would want to do this.) I think there's pretty much zero chance that we'll be sufficiently energetic to head to Zaanse Schans.

So, my question for you experienced folks is, would you recommend that we at least try to take in some operating windmills (if so, hints to closest/best/easiest?), or should we cross it off the list and just stroll Amsterdam? We're only in town for one night. And I'm sorry, I know I'm asking for a very subjective response, but if you have a strong opinion I would really like to know it.

Thanks!

The best windmill site is Kinderdijk near Rotterdam, take train there. You will see 19 historic windmills. Zaanse Schans is a touristy site, not worth your time.
Strolling Amsterdam is wonderful!!
I know nothing about National Windmill Days.
