Sicily - Cefalu and Palermo

Hi, we have 6 nights in Cefalu followed by 2 nights in Palermo end of May beginning of June.

While we are in Cefalu we are considering a day trip somewhere. What do you think we need to see on this day trip?

I think Valley of the Temples is probably the top one, maybe Taormina? What are your thoughts?

Also, will there be coach trips available from Cefalu to do day trips?

Thanks

Valley of the Temples would be my #1, Segesta is closer and smaller, and Villa Romana is doable as well (it’s basically a straight shot on the autostrada.) Idk about coach tours from Cefalu, it’s kind of a small town really. I can’t imagine there’s enough demand to warrant bus tours from there versus Palermo. If I were in your shoes, I would just rent a car for the day. The driving is pretty easy, and worth the flexibility. There are rental places in Cefalu.

Do you have plans to visit Monreale? This is best done from Palermo, but you only have two days there. Using one of your day trips for Monreale (or just sightseeing in Palermo) is also a good idea and easily connected by train with Cefalu.

Many thanks for the reply. Happy to hire a car, so thank you.

Also, no plans yet for Palermo. I will look into Monreale.

Thanks

Best day trips in the immediate area:

Segesta
Selinunte
Erice
Monreale
San Vito Lo Capo
Mondello
Bagheria (art)
Valley of Temples (further out)
Villa Romana del Casale (further out)

There might be other options, too, depending on your interests but we don’t really know what you want for your vacation so I am providing the most common suggestions.

So, don’t know why you are allocating 6 nights to Cefalu? Cefalu was the one place in Sicily where we would not return…super touristy, unfriendly locals, subpar food. The Valley of the Temples at dusk was the highlight of our wonderful trip to Sicily. We liked Taormina and had a great time driving around Mt. Etna from there. Palermo is lovely, has great food and nearby Monreale is awesome. But, Cefalu?

You may want to consider redistributing your time 6 days Palermo (do day trips from here, including Erice and Monreale) and 2 for Cefalu’.

That is, unless you are hoping for mostly beach time.

San Vito Lo Capo, Scopello are west of Palermo and Mondello is adjacent to it. All great beach scenes.
