Mittenwald to Fussen

Hi. We will be using the trains for our entire 8 day journey across Austria and Germany, except for the when we want to go from Mittenwald to Fussen. I've been told it's only a 1 hour 15 min drive. I'd like to hire a private car, instead of rent a car because after Fussen we will be taking the train directly to Munich. Does anyone have recommendations for who/how to hire a private car for this trip?

It doesn't look like anyone here is going to suggest a private car between Mittenwald and Füssen, and I, having never used anything in Germany and Europe other than public transportation, won't either.

Why do you think you want to go from Mittenwald to Füssen by car?

The Bahn website suggests two routes, both going as the first leg from Mittenwald to Garmish-Partenkirchen. From Gap you can go either to Pfronten-Ried by rail and then to Füssen by bus, or you can go from GaP by bus via Oberammergau to Echelsbacherbrücke and from there change to another bus to Füssen. Both routes take just over 3 hours. The entire route from Mittenwald to Füssen via Echelsbachbrücke, both rail and bus, would be covered by a Bayern-Ticket, 2 people for 39€, if you are not already using a pass or a Deutschland-Ticket. For the Pfronten route could use a 36€ Werdenfel-Ticket to Prronten-Reid, but you would also need a ticket for the bus from Pfronten-Ried to Füssen.

Pfronten is one of my favorite places in Bavaria, but taking the other route allows you to see both Oberammergau and the outside, at least, of Wieskirche.

If it's the time you are worried about, VVT, VerkehrsVerbundTirol, which runs Austrian buses, shows a route, again through Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Reutte, then by VVT bus to Füssen in just over 2 hours. Again, Werdenfels-Ticket to Reutte and VTTbus ticket from Reutte to Füssen for 5,80€/person.

So, if you can't find a driver from Mittenwald to Füssen, all is not lost.

In 2018 my husband and I traveled from Füssen (seeing the castle, of course) to Reutte, en route to Garmish-Partenkirchen and thence to Mittenwald. I had found a bus that would take us to Reutte. Unfortunately, it was a Sunday, and the bus I was expecting at the bus stop, a German one, did not show up. There was another bus, an Austrian one, that stopped, but I didn't jump on it, and I should have. On Sundays they seem to share the schedule, but it's not explicit.

We walked into Füssen and went to the train station to try to find another bus or train, but there was nothing. We found out that neither bus company talks to the other, and neither of them talk to Deutsche Bahn, who includes the buses on their itineraries. We ended up taking a taxi to Reutte, and it was a lovely experience on a quiet country road. It was a more scenic route than the train, and the driver chatted a bit about what we were seeing. And it wasn't even that expensive--25€.

The scenery on the train from Reutte to Garmish and Mittenwald was beautiful.

Well, that's the joy of travel and making your own travel plans. Good luck, I'm sure you will figure this out.
