Frieburg, Germany, near French border - good for day trip?

... and how to get to the Black Forest Open Air Museum? What else should we see in Freiburg? Thanks, friends!

Hello! Where are you day tripping from, and do you have a car? What time of year? What are your interests?

The Open Air Museum is not in Freiburg, and you need a car to get there and back reasonably. The museum, the cuckoo clock museum in Furtwangen and the drive through the surrounding area would make a good day trip.

We are day tripping from Colmar, by train. I see by the link in one of the responses that there is public transportation to the BF Open Air Museum, btw.

Freiburg im Breisgau from Colmar is easier to do by bus than by train For the train you have to go all the way down into Basel, and for the cheap train you need to change stations from Basel SBB (French platforms) to Basel Bad Bahnhof and then all the way back north.

The bus goes direct, straight across the Rhine.

or by train up to Strasbourg, then to Offenburg, then train back south to Freiburg.

either way, a hassle

You could take the train from Strasbourg to Gengenbach, then get a train to the Vogtsbauernhof. To do that, you just book your ticket online (I would suggest using the German train system as it is easier). Just go to https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en. For the departure city, choose "Strasbourg, gare" from the drop down menu, and for arrive, choose "Bahnhofstraße, Gengenbach". Input your date and approximate time of day then hit the search button and it will show you the available trains.

The other option is to just go to the Strasbourg train station and buy a round-trip ticket to Gengenbach. It will take you on the same route. There is one stopover in Offenburg, where you will change trains. It's an easy transfer as Offenburg is not that large of a station. That will take you to Gengenbach, which is a delightful chocolate-box village with gorgeous scenery, half-timbered houses and some very nice cafes and restaurants. From there you can take a train to the Vogtsbauernhof. This website - https://www.vogtsbauernhof.de/en/visit/how-to-get-here - gives you details on how to get there by train.

Or if you don't want to stop in Gengenbach, you can continue on the train until you get to Hausach. Once there, transfer to the local Ortenau train, which will take you to a stop directly across from the museum (from the station, you walk through tunnel under the road to the other side). There are cafes by the train station and also one at the museum.
