What is there to see and do in that little country of Luxembourg?

I checked the country drop-down menu before posting, and Luxembourg didn't rate a spot. I did a search, here in the forum, and Luxembourg Gardens in Paris keeps popping up.

There's a chance we may pass through there when leaving Cochem, Germany on our way to Belgium. What is there of interest? Should we just drive on through?

Walking around the core of Luxembourg City is quite interesting. I found the American Cemetery outside Luxembourg city very moving. As with all American Cemeteries it is well maintained and contains historical background information. This is also the cemetery where Patton is buried. I am always moved by the rows of white headstones that represent someone's child, husband, father, brother who gave their lives in service of their country.

Lonely Planet recommends spending time in Luxembourg City. The old town is a UNESCO Heritage site and visiting the castle villages is a good way to spend your time. If you can go on the weekend when hotel prices drop that’s even better.

I like Luxembourg City. Some nice streets, a good museum and cathedral, Ducal Palace (depending on the time of year). I have quite a few shots of and from the Casemates. I particularly liked walking around the Grund area.

If you are driving from Cochem, the Mullerthal area is very scenic and provides many opportunities for hiking. Vianden is very much worth a stop-off, a pretty village with an impressive castle.

We enjoyed the Luxembourg City History museum for a couple of hours. There were explanations of the fortifications and battles but also exhibits about daily living.

We also enjoyed Vianden. Good views from the castle and some furnished rooms and special exhibits in the castle.

This may be a specialized interest, but for a few years, Andy Schleck was a hero of bicycle racing for Luxembourg, and won the Tour de France in 2010. He’s now retired from pro racing, but has two bike shops - in Itzig and in Mertert. I never saw him race live, but would visit one of his shops if I was in the area.

As I recall, it's a pretty area to visit. There are not mind-blowing sites to visit, but it is a place that is worth passing through if it is convenient to do so. That may actually be its charm in that it does not get the high amount of traffic that some other places do. Check it off the list as you head towards Southern Belgium. These areas are quite wonderful to visit and very laid back.
Pass through on your way to Burgoyne, Dinant, Namur etc.

If you have any interest in WWII history, there’s an amazing museum in Diekirch filled with artifacts & equipment left behind by soldiers fighting the Battle of the Bulge. Tanks, trucks, uniforms — it’s huge, with audio guides — well worth a visit.
