Review of Auberge le Sombral in St-Cirq-Lapopie

The Auberge le Sombral is recommended in the RS Guide, but there are few comments about it on the forum so I hope this review will be helpful. The Auberge le Sombral has an ideal location on the main square in the heart of St.-Cirq-Lapopie, just opposite the TI. It has an attractive reception area and two breakfast rooms, where the host, Marian, serves an optional breakfast of fruit, juice, yogurt, assorted breads and pastries, and coffee/tea. You can drive down to the village square to drop off your luggage—but be sure to ask how to get there because GPS tried to send us down a pedestrian walkway. A pass for the parking lot is included with your room. The parking lot seems far away when you drive to it, but the entrance to the parking lot doubles back so the lot itself is just above the village. I have problem knees, but I managed fine. If your knees are very bad, then this could be difficult. Marian was quick to respond to all emails related to reservations and our questions, and was a very pleasant host. The auberge has about 8 rooms—most on the first floor (our second floor), up a wide staircase (there is no elevator or AC). Our room was a bit larger than most rooms we have stayed in in moderately priced hotels in France, and had a very nice modern bathroom with shower. On the weekend in early April when we visited, Marian served lunch and a menu of drinks and desserts until about 6 pm, although this might depend on the season and day of the week, so be sure to ask. The auberge and our room were very quiet at night, although this might not be the case in the high season. Overall, we had a great two-night stay at Auberge le Sombral at a very reasonable price, and we would gladly stay there again.
