Go back on the train and continue to Lund.

Any particular interests? What led you to consider a day trip to Malmö?

(Also, Malmö is in Sweden, not Denmark.)

If you have no special interests, I'd suggest going to Lund instead.

(And since you know Malmö is in Sweden it might have been a better idea to post the question in the Sweden forum.)

This was my experience in 2017, so take it as you will! I simply went to Ikea. This was towards the end of a 2 week solo trip throughout Scandinavia and I enjoyed the journey--especially crossing the Øresund Bridge and checking out what it was like to go to an Ikea in its motherland. It was my understanding that there wasn't a whole heck of a lot else to see in Malmö otherwise.

I rented a bike and pedaled around the city and out to the beach, about a half day excursion. True it's not the most dynamic place, but I wanted to set foot in Sweden and the timing worked for me.

I went to Malmö by train from Copenhagen because I’m a fan of The Bridge (Tv series) and I wanted to cross the bridge. I was really surprised by how not-interesting Malmö was. The weather was nice so I had lunch outside at a restaurant in a pretty square (Lila Torg, I think) and then wandered around a bit. Then I did a canal boat trip, which was moderately entertaining. Then I got back on the train to Copenhagen.

We have been to Malmö several times while our daughter lived there.

Ribersborgs Kallbadhus is a charming place on a dock to have a snack and watch the sea swans, or have a sauna or bath if you want! We have walked to Sankt Petri kyrka and then had lunch in a nearby square. Slottsträdgården is interesting and pretty to walk through and also has a wonderful cafe. We enjoyed browsing antique stores on some of the older streets.

I agree with the other commenters that Lund is very appealing. I would also recommend Ystad for a Copenhagen day trip. Keep in mind that the price to ride the train across the bridge and back is expensive compared to a train ticket to travel an hour within Denmark.
