Denmark In January - Copenhagen and ??

Hi all.
My husband and I will be traveling to Copenhagen in January 2024 to move my daughter in to University. We will arrive CPH at 6pm on January 4 and fly out again at 10am on January 11. Assuming we will be spending the first few days exploring Copenhagen with our daughter and getting her settled in, we would be free to do further adventures starting on January 7. This leaves us 4 full days before we have to get back to Copenhagen in advance of our departure flight.
We have never been to Scandinavia before but we may have the possibility of coming back to visit for her Spring Break in March. Keeping the possibility of a future visit in mind, where else should we go on this January trip? To help aid your suggestions, we enjoy local food, architecture, outdoors/hikes, Rick's suggested walks, history (him), art (me), and visiting new places.
In my head I'm toying with visiting Norway, hoping that if we come back in March we can get to Sweden, Finland, and Estonia. But I'm not locked into this idea either. Is the NIN a bad idea during the winter?
Hoping for ALL the great advice you can offer.
Thanks so much!

Days are extremely short in northern Europe in January, so I'd focus on cities. Copenhagen-Oslo wouldn't be a bad idea. However, if you don't arrive until the night of January 6 and need to get your daughter settled, I don't see how you'll have seen much of Copenhagen before the morning of January 9. That's only 2 days, and you might have some jetlag on January 7.

I'd be inclined to simply stay in Copenhagen and possibly take some day trips. If you did that, you'd have some flexibility in selecting each day's activities, which could be really handy if the weather is ugly.

Average number of hours of sunshine in Oslo is 39 in the entire month of December and 47 in January. Comparable figures for Copenhagen aren't much higher: 41 and 52.

I don't have that data for Flam (along the Norway-in-a-Nutshell route), but I wouldn't be surprised if Flam is worse than Oslo. I wouldn't want to risk the Nutshell trip in the winter, but I'm bad-weather averse, and I'm also cheap. The Nutshell is a pricey trip, and I wouldn't want to spend the money during an especially risky time of year. However, as far as I know the NiN transportation does run in the winter, though in some cases at a lower frequency.

NIN is a bad idea that time of year for reasons stated above.

RS missed b my any options in Copenhagen. Take a look at some other guides as well. Many day trips and sites in the city. I’ve listed some ideas on your previous post.

I, personally, would stick with Copenhagen for this college study drop off. You could pop over to Sweden for a day trip, or overnight if Denmark seems limited (although I can’t imagine that myself!). Train connections are good out of Copenhagen, as are flights if you must travel elsewhere.

Art - interest. Numerous art museums in Copenhagen as well as Louisiana, easy day trip.

History- Resistance Museum (WWII) is fascinating. See my other suggestions for day trips on earlier post. I found it helpful to review Danish, Swedish, Norwegian history. Much interaction.

That time of year and so few days, I would stick with Copenhagen - and anywhere else cozy with a good fireplace ! Maybe a day trip to Odense or Malmo, or over to see Fredriksborg castle.

Norway in a Nutshell is possible, or some variation of it. But the limited amount daylight means I do not recommend it in January, save it for later.

Spending a few days extra in Copenhagen is not a bad idea, and doing some day trips. Although Malmö should not be high on the day trip list in my opinion. If you want to see a bit of Sweden, Lund is a much better choice. You can also spend a few days in e.g. Kalmar or Gothenburg. But four days will also allow you to visit Stockholm if that is what you prefer.

Any particular type of art and historical eras you like? And are there any favourite architecture styles?

There are some very nice day trips from Copenhagen. I spent the better part of a day in Roskilde (cathedral and Viking ship museum, although much of it is outside so maybe not so much in January) and another day seeing the castles north of Copenhagen.

I recommend to consider Hamburg or Berlin in Germany.

Norway experience is best with more daylight and some open passes.

For consideration of your potential return in March at that time, it might make more sense to add Norway to your itinerary. If you do at that time I would highly recommend taking the overnight boat from Denmark (leaves out of Copenhagen & Fredrikshavn) to Oslo. It's a nice trip and makes great use of time traveling while you are sleeping!

OP has been back from their trip for three and a half months.
